smokey

Smokey, the beloved mascot of the University of Tennessee, is a Bluetick Coonhound who proudly represents the Volunteers with his spirited presence and deep Tennessee roots. The tradition began in 1953 when Smokey was introduced at a football game and howled in response to the crowd's cheers—winning over fans immediately.
Since then, a line of Smokeys, both live dogs and costumed versions, have become iconic symbols of UT pride. The live mascot leads the football team onto the field at Neyland Stadium, while the costumed Smokey energizes crowds at games and campus events. Smokey not only reflects the state’s heritage, as Bluetick Coonhounds are native to Tennessee, but also embodies Volunteer spirit—loyal, bold, and full of heart.
